I was born in Graz, Austria, in 1970. Today I am living as an artist in Vienna. I am involved in photography, landscaping, interior design and the fine arts.
With NY REFLEXION I have compiled a visual and written reflection on New York. I am a very connected observer of this wonderful city. As a European I have often been welcomed by its citizens. Now I am returning the favor – NY REFLEXION. It includes several hundred photos as well as numerous personal statements from people like you.
NY REFLEXION is a platform which illustrates how different people have dealt with 9/11. How has this event changed the lives of New Yorkers, of Americans and those worldwide?
Ten years after 9/11 is a good occasion to reflect profoundly on individual and communal feelings. It is a collection of experiences and responses – yours, mine and others. New York has an amazing ability to heighten a person’s perception, awareness and consciousness. I love to experience myself in New York – I breathe differently there, and I see the world differently upon leaving New York.
My love for NY makes me think that this city is more than an American metropolis. Many things have been said about New York. Numerous films have shown different perspectives of this unrivaled place on the Hudson River. Once I think I have captured the magic of this city, it has already changed. In New York things grow fast and disappear fast, as well. So what makes New York, New York? I believe she is a delusion of freedom. I call it a delusion, a myth because our freedom is an illusion. The supposed freedom can lead to a kind of captivity. NY is tempting. NY requires 24 hours of attention. NY always requires attention and keeps you spellbound. NY is like a drug.
Before I visited New York I had travelled to India many times. New York seems to be the symbol of the West – and India of the East. Their points of view could not be more different, and it is these differing perceptions of the world that appeal greatly to me. It makes me happy to discover communality, and I get great pleasure when I experience that magic moment when something strange and foreign becomes part of myself. It gives me some kind of inner peace. It makes me feel alive.
New York is full of big egos.
It is this environment which has enabled me to better observe my own ego – except when I go shopping. I created NY REFLEXION to rediscover myself in this wonderful city. Through this book New York continues to be a wonderland for me. The city communicates to me in many ways. It either screams at me in Times Square or it whispers to me at four in the morning in Central Park. How many times I was sitting at the waterfront just by myself, falling in love with the beauty of the skyline? There is nothing sexier than its silhouette. New York's appearance is a source of great energy for me. In this city I can do things that I can probably not do anywhere else in the world. Does everybody feel this way?
The famous Austrian jazz musician Joe Zawinul – who unfortunately died too early – once was asked why he lives in New York. He presumably said: "Because here is where it all happens". I truly understand this feeling. In New York I often feel that I am in the right place and I do not wish to be anywhere else. It feels like I have arrived, like finding my home. I am then at the place where history is written – even when it is only my history. What else can I want from a place?
NY REFLEXION is my personal declaration of love, which illustrates the magic of this city. It was created in the spirit of a vision that opens doors. A vision of a space – the one I observe and the one I interpret and create.
The joint efforts contributed to NY REFLEXION will be introduced to the public in several formats. I want to reach out to as many different groups of people as possible. Many different people will share their thoughts and feelings on their post 9/11 experiences and on their ongoing relationship with New York. Each format – be it coffee table books, paperbacks, postcards, my facebook group or this website – will provide space for the readers' personal comments and statements. We will all be able to reflect profoundly, to add our input and eventually to overcome a lack of communication in today's information age.
This is a project of love, diversity and faith with a strong connection to our history and New York.
Be a part of it, dive into it and contribute your time. Thank you for every donation and support in other ways to NY REFLEXION!
Vielen Dank and share your love.
